There’s a lot of exciting talk about urban algorithmic transparency and accountability, but how do we put that into practice? How do we help people actually do stuff?

With the Global Observatory on Urban Artifical Intelligence (GOUAI) and CIDOB, the Barcelona Centre for International Affairs, my colleague and I investigated 3 case studies of cities pioneering the application of algorithmic accountability initiatives. In-depth interviews and questionnaires identified what worked well, what didn’t, and what were key enabling factors for the success of transparency initiatives.

Surprisingly, we learnt that organisational culture was a huge factor in supporting transparency initiatives.

The result is a report which highlights both emergent learnings and specific, actionable recommendations for other cities looking to implement accountability and transparency initiatives.
